2800 B.C. Babylon - Soap invented or discovered by mixing fat, salt and ashes.
c. 500 B.C. Greece - King Augeas orders Hercules to clean the Augean Stables as his 5th of 12 labors.
312 B.C. Rome - 1st public bath constructed using hypocast for hot water.
100 B.C. Roman Empire - Strigil, a metal scraper, used to clean the body
after sweating. 
Mount Sapo gives
its name to “Soap”.
AD 212 Rome - Baths at Caracalla ordered built by Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Bassianus.
AD 1000 England - Soap is introduced. It is said by the Celts.
AD 1608 Jamestown, Virginia - Commercial soap making comes to North America.
AD c. 1702 Bavaria - Stepmother orders Cinderella to clean the house in lieu of attending the Ball. Operas, ballet and fables to follow.
AD 1850 Paris, France - Louis Pasteur postulates germ theory.
AD 1865 Great Britain - Joseph Lister uses antiseptics.
AD 1876 Grand Rapids, Michigan - Melville Bissell at the behest of his wife invents and patents the first carpet sweeper.
AD 1900 England - Sanitary Engineer Thomas Crapper develops valve system to make possible the flushing toilet.
AD 1908 Canton, Ohio - William Henry “Boss” Hoover patents first commercially viable vacuum cleaner, invented by his wife’s cousin Murray Spangler ( a janitor from Canton, Ohio).
AD 1916 Germany - Synthetic cleaners known as “detergents” developed.
AD 1926 “Beater Bar” added to Hoover vacuum. (It beats as it sweeps as it cleans!)
AD 1948 Avon, Massachusetts - Mrs. D washes dirty words out of her son’s mouth.
AD 1953 USA - Detergent sales top soap sales for first

AD 1965 Enzyme cleaners introduced to “eat” bacteria and thus eliminate many odors.
AD 1966 Fort Dix, New Jersey - Drill Sgt. Leon Davis orders barracks to be cleaned “immaculate-like” prior to troops leaving on weekend pass.
